DED thermomechanical simulation: inclined and curved model in 316L stainless steel
Industrial need
Manufacturing a complex demonstrator in 316L stainless steel by directed energy deposition (DED), combining an inclined build with curved surfaces, while ensuring path stability and dimensional accuracy.
IREPA LASER solution
Development of a thermomechanical simulation workflow to evaluate path-dependent manufacturing strategies, with local adjustment of deposition speed and laser power according to geometric zones.
Technical challenge
The challenge lies in managing variations in heat input caused by the inclined geometry and curved surfaces. These configurations locally alter deposition conditions and can lead to variations in bead width, overheating, distortion and dimensional defects.
Results achieved
The simulation made it possible to fine-tune deposition parameters along the path, reducing experimental iterations and securing a “first-time-right” approach with better control of the final geometry.
