Thermomechanical simulation of laser powder DED: aerospace component in Inconel 625
Industrial need
Manufacturing an aerospace component in Inconel 625 by directed energy deposition (DED), controlling distortion and dimensional accuracy from the manufacturing stage onwards.
IREPA LASER solution
Development of a thermomechanical simulation dedicated to the DED process, making it possible to predict thermal history, distortion and critical zones before manufacturing. This approach is integrated upstream to secure the process.
Technical challenge
The challenge lies in simulating a large thin-walled cylindrical geometry subjected to repeated thermal cycles. This type of configuration carries high risks of distortion and dimensional deviations that must be accurately anticipated.
Results achieved
The simulation identifies critical distortion zones and guides corrective strategies before production. It significantly reduces trial-and-error phases and secures a “first-time-right” approach, which is essential in the aerospace environment.
