Integrating laser risk into your DUER with PCSL training

Integrating laser risk into your DUER: why and how?

Laser risk assessment is a mandatory step for any company using laser devices. By integrating these risks into your Single Risk Assessment Document (DUER), you not only guarantee the safety of your employees but also meet regulatory requirements. This process may seem complex, but with a laser safety officer and appropriate training, such as PCSL training (Laser Safety Competent Person), you can easily ensure compliance while protecting your teams.

What is the DUER and why include laser risk in it?

The DUER is a mandatory document for all companies, designed to identify and assess the risks to which employees are exposed in their work environment. It is essential to include laser risks as soon as the company uses laser devices in its processes. These risks include hazards to the eyes and skin, as well as environmental risks due to prolonged exposure.

Why is it crucial to include laser risk?

  • Lasers can cause serious eye damage even from a distance.
  • Uncontrolled exposure can lead to skin burns.
  • In the event of an accident, the employer is directly liable.

Compliance with these measures is not only a legal obligation but also a way of protecting your employees against invisible yet potentially fatal hazards.

The importance of a laser safety officer

To guarantee safety within the company, it is essential to appoint a laser safety officer. This key role ensures that all protective measures are in place and that risks are correctly assessed. The officer must have solid training, such as PCSL training (Laser Safety Competent Person), to be able to carry out their duties.

The officer’s main tasks include:

  • Identifying risk areas within the company.
  • Implementing the necessary protective measures.
  • Defining personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Ongoing awareness-raising for employees exposed to laser risks
  • Applying regulatory and normative texts:
    • Articles R.4452-1 to 4452-31 of the French Labour Code (Code du Travail)
    • Standard EN 60825-1 or IEC 60825-1
    • Standard EN 60825-4 or IEC 60825-4
    • Standard ISO EN 11553-1
    • Standard ISO EN 11553-2

The responsibilities of the laser safety officer

The laser safety officer must ensure that all laser risk protection measures are in place and complied with on a daily basis. Here are some of the essential responsibilities of this role:

Responsibility Description
Laser safety officer Under the employer’s responsibility, they keep the list of potentially exposed employees up to date and liaise with occupational health services.
Risk assessment Analysis of the laser devices used and assessment of the associated risks.
Staff awareness Ensures that all employees exposed to Class 1, Class 1C, Class 1M, Class 2 and Class 2M lasers receive laser safety awareness training. PISL training mandatory.
Staff training Ensures that all employees exposed to Class 3R, Class 3B and Class 4 lasers are trained in laser risks. PERL training mandatory.
Updating the DUER Regular updating of the Single Document to include new risks.
Regulatory monitoring Keeps up to date with legal developments concerning laser safety.

The officer plays a key role in accident prevention and ensures effective management of laser risk within the company. To be fully effective, it is essential that they regularly attend refresher courses, such as the PCSL refresher, in order to keep up with technological and regulatory developments.

Meeting requirements with PCSL training

Laser risks cannot be properly managed without appropriate training. The Laser Safety Competent Person (PCSL) training course offered by IREPA LASER is specifically designed to enable officers to master regulations and good practice. This training ensures DUER compliance and the safety of employees exposed to laser risks.

Objectives of PCSL training

PCSL training has several specific objectives aimed at preparing managers to assess and manage laser risks effectively in a working environment. Participants acquire comprehensive expertise to:

  • Understand the physical phenomena associated with the use of lasers.
  • Identify the risks and the areas to be secured within the company.
  • Implement protective measures in compliance with regulations (EN 60825-1, French Labour Code,…)
  • Monitor the continuing training of staff exposed to laser risks.

Thanks to this training, officers become specialists capable of protecting their company against the risks associated with lasers while ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

Details of the PCSL refresher

To ensure that the skills acquired remain up to date in the face of technological and regulatory developments, a PCSL refresher is required every five years. This refresher allows those already trained to familiarise themselves with new practices and revise the fundamental concepts.

The benefits of the PCSL refresher:

  • Updating knowledge in line with the latest regulations.
  • Adapting safety procedures to new laser technologies.
  • Strengthening practical skills for optimal risk management.

The refresher ensures that your company remains compliant and that the laser safety officer maintains a high level of expertise to protect employees effectively.
