Laser welding at Renault Ampère: IREPA LASER boosts the performance of aluminium assemblies
On-site technical assistance, process innovation and improved weld quality: IREPA LASER recently brought its laser welding expertise to Renault Ampère, the Renault Group’s electric vehicle division.
The objective: to optimise the laser welding process on 5000 series aluminium in a complex configuration, while guaranteeing reliable and reproducible industrial results.
Laser welding: combining speed, quality and robustness in real-world conditions
The challenge: to increase the laser welding speed on a battery component in the so-called ‘ledge’ position, while maintaining impeccable weld seam quality.
This particularly demanding laser welding configuration involved constraints in terms of tolerances, geometry and path.
A targeted and effective laser welding technical intervention
The IREPA LASER team worked directly at the production site, with a multi-stage laser welding action plan:
- Optimisation of the laser welding wobble parameters, taking into account assembly gaps and part positioning tolerances
- Use of a Trumpf BrightLineWeld dual-core fibre laser, enabling homogeneous and controlled melting
- Significant reduction in porosity, ensuring the reliability and robustness of the welds
- Laser welding speed increased by more than 120 %, while maintaining a high level of quality
Concrete laser welding results for e-mobility
The optimised parts are critical battery components for electric and hybrid vehicles, where the thermal performance and mechanical reliability of laser welding are essential.
Thanks to this intervention, Renault Ampère now benefits from a faster, more stable and more cost-effective laser welding process, perfectly suited to series production.
