Laser technology serving medical performance: an innovative hip prosthesis
IREPA LASER continues its commitment to a sustainable and innovative industry by unveiling a new advance in the medical field. At the Medi’Nov Connection trade fair in June 2023, our team presented a demonstrator of a hip prosthesis textured by laser erosion, the fruit of high-level scientific collaboration using cutting-edge laser technology.
Combined expertise serving medical laser technology
This project brings together several partners recognised for their expertise: IREPA LASER, CRITT Matériaux Innovation, Holo3, the BIOS URCA laboratory, the MIM team of the Institut Charles Sadron, IS2M – Institut de Science des Matériaux de Mulhouse – and Inserm.
Together, we have developed a hip prosthesis whose surface has been functionalised by laser surface texturing using suitable femtosecond equipment. This laser technology makes it possible to modify the topography of an implantable surface selectively, in three dimensions, without altering the structure of the material.
Innovative laser technology meeting the challenges of the medical sector
The aim: to give the surface antibacterial properties in order to prevent biofilm formation and post-surgical infections, while ensuring the biocompatibility of the implant.
This prosthesis illustrates several key advantages of our laser technology:
- High-precision laser texturing on complex surfaces
- Selective treatment without material degradation
- Improved biological and mechanical behaviour of devices
- Reduced risk of infection on implants
Our R&D teams combine advanced laser processes, optical inspection and materials expertise to design laser technology solutions tailored to the strict requirements of the healthcare sector.
Numerous applications for this medical laser technology
Antibacterial functionalisation using laser technology opens the way to numerous applications in the field of implantable medical devices: orthopaedic implants, dental implants, cardiovascular devices and surgical instruments.
Our demonstrator is only a first step. We invite players in the medical sector to share their laser technology application needs with us. At IREPA LASER, we are convinced that innovation through laser technology will help to improve the performance, safety and reliability of care in the long term.
