Cutting of brittle materials
Industrial need
Cutting heterogeneous, lamellar brittle materials such as mother-of-pearl (illustrated) or other complex materials such as advanced composite materials (CMC, CFRP), while guaranteeing their structural integrity.
IREPA LASER solution
Implementation of an ultrashort-pulse laser cutting process enabling highly localised interaction with the material. This technology allows complex shapes to be produced without mechanical contact.
Technical challenge
The challenge is to achieve cutting precision on materials that are highly sensitive to thermal and mechanical stresses, while guaranteeing a high-quality appearance and the absence of cracking and chipping.
Results achieved
The process enables precise, high-quality cuts in materials that were previously difficult to process with conventional laser technologies. It thus opens up new industrialisation possibilities for high-value-added components.
